Shiatsu - the compassionate healing touch

Neil Gulliver writes:

Shiatsu is a form of natural healing based on principles similar to those of Acupuncture, whereas pressure is used instead of needles to act on 'pressure points' and 'meridians' of vital energy in the body. Originating in Japan, the word 'shi' means 'finger' and 'atsu' means 'pressure'. Shiatsu shares its origins with Martial Arts, T'ai Chi Chuan, Yoga and Chi Gung in that it regards bodily function as being governed by the flow of vital energy called 'Ki' - equivalent to 'Prana' in Yoga.

During the past thirty years, Shiatsu has gained an increasing reputation in the UK as a therapy that is not only very effective but is experienced as nurturing and supportive and a pleasure to receive. In addition to musculo-skeletal problems such as back pain, neck and shoulder pain and joint stiffness, Shiatsu can help with fatigue, indigestion, menstrual problems, depression and various emotional issues.

The aim is to assist clients to a better understanding in maintaining and developing their level of health, and to avoid repeating the same physical or emotional imbalances. The ancient and wise traditions of shiatsu then become a means of personal empowerment and self-confidence. Advice may be given on posture, breathing, self-treatment exercises, diet and positive thinking.

Modern practitioners may incorporate a wide variety of techniques ranging from deep massage to gentle touch to laying-on of hands or so-called `spiritual healing.' Sessions last about an hour, with the client lying fully clothed on a mat or futon. It is a good idea to wear loose clothing and to avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand. Overall, Shiatsu is very enjoyable and beneficial both for the giver and the receiver. There is frequently a feeling of increased vitality after a session: you feel invigorated yet relaxed.

Shiatsu technique can vary from strong to firm to light, depending on individual needs. It can therefore be used to help a wide range of ages and conditions, and usually leads to improved well-being both physically and mentally.
