"Yoga itself is neutral.
It allows us to grow in whichever direction is natural and life-supporting.
Whoever Practices Yoga will be enlivened in his or her own way."
- Alistair Shearer
The philosophical and spiritual aspects of yoga will be at the heart of the class, which will include:
Class leader Jo says:
"Yoga can become a compassionate friend when the practice is used to develop self-awareness, peace and meditative movements. Yoga techniques include:
Yoga poses strengthen and rejuvenate the body and the mind. The asanas remove tension, promote greater flexibility of the spine, muscles and joints, and create an internal massage to improve the function of internal organs. As well as producing physical benefits, the asanas are also mental exercises in concentration and so encourage optimum good health.
Relaxation is one of the main aspects of Yoga as it is vital for keeping the body and mind healthy. We take control and actively let go. The practices relax the mind so that it can become steady and peaceful. Yoga releases the body's tension to allow revitalising energy to flow freely. Deep relaxation is a state of inner awareness that brings the body and mind into harmony for self-healing and to gain greater knowledge of oneself.
The body becomes a welcoming vessel for the breath, so that breathing is steady, rhythmical and calm. Breathing techniques strengthen the lungs, soothe the nervous system, have a direct influence on the emotions and encourage a vibrant awakening of the mind. The breath draws us into the present moment and into the wonders of the here and now.
These practices bring refreshment and a much-needed rest for the mind that is always on the run. The power of a concentrated mind is developed to promote a more productive and peaceful life. One learns to witness emotions and thoughts in a way that encourages acceptance, mental clarity and self-transformation."
To see Jo demonstrating some of the poses included in this class, click here >. Included with some of the poses are quotations that Jo has chosen from two of the spiritual texts of the Yogic tradition - the Bhagavad Gita (Juan Mascaro translation) and the Upanishads. Jo encourages you to explore these texts and find reflections that inspire you.
If you are unfamiliar with any of these poses, only attempt them under the supervision of a qualified Yoga teacher. For each pose, there are precautions and prohibitions that apply. In her class, Jo will carefully assess every individual before suggesting that they attempt a pose, and offer alternatives when a pose is unsuitable or too difficult.
